After an outstanding weekend for the UMass Lowell River Hawks, Hockey East has named freshmen forward Evan Campbell as the Rookie of the Week.
Campbell tallied a career-high two goals in the River Hawks, 3-2, win over the Massachusetts Minutemen at the Tsongas Center on Friday night. He finished the night with four shots on goal and a plus-two rating.
During his freshmen season, Campbell has skated in 22-of-30 games registering seven points (6g, 1a) with 32 shots on goal and a plus-five rating. The Port Coquitlam, B.C. native has amassed five goals in his last six games, after notching only one goal in his first 16 games as a River Hawk.
Campbell has had his playing time increased over the past few games as the River Hawks deal with injuries to their roster. Ryan McGrath and Scott Wilson have missed a few games over the past month. However, McGrath has returned to action as of late. Head Coach Norm Bazin will have a tough time getting him playing action when Wilson returns.
Last season, Campbell scored 20 goals and added 46 assists in 51 games for the Langley Rivermen of the British Columbia Hockey League. The Edmonton Oilers prospect was named as BCHL Langley Rivermen Top Forward in 2012-13.
UMass Lowell is back in action on Friday, Feb. 21 in the first game of a home-and-home series with the No. 1 ranked Boston College Eagles at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill. Game two is Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. for the River Hawks final regular-season home game.
