Hockey East announced their weekly awards on Tuesday, including naming UMass Lowell senior goaltender Doug Carr as Defensive Player of the Week and the River Hawks as Hockey East’s Team of the Week.

Carr stopped 56-of-60 shots in two games against the Clarkson University Golden Knights at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. over the weekend.

The Hanover, Mass. native stopped 27-of-28 shots on Friday night as the River Hawks and Golden Knights skated to a 1-1 tie. Saturday night, Carr managed to stop 29-of-32 shots on UMass Lowell’s way to victory over Clarkson, 4-3, despite being outshout 32-14 by the Golden Knights.

Carr improved to 7-1-1 after the weekend and has started three consecutive games for the first time this season with the minor upper body injury sidelining Winnipeg Jets’ prospect Connor Hellebuyck. The goaltender sits tied for first in the Nation with Hellebuyck and the University of Denver’s Sam Brittain (Florida Panthers) with a 1.75 goals-against average.

The outstanding play of Carr between the pipes together with a scrapping UMass Lowell team earned the River Hawks a Hockey East Team of the Week honor, going 1-0-1 against Clarkson.

Quinnipiac University (15) and Ferris State University (15) are the only two schools to have more victories than UMass Lowell (14) this season and are the only three schools with 14-plus wins.

The River Hawks are unbeaten in their past four games (3-0-1) and have are 13-2-1 over their last 16 games after starting the season off 1-3-1.

Up next the UMass Lowell River Hawks head to the great outdoors to face the Northeastern Huskies at Frozen Fenway on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3:00 p.m. eastern in a Hockey East conference matchup.
