The University of Maine has moved their game against Hockey East opponent UMass Lowell a day later due to the Black Bears football team hosting a NCAA second-round Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff game against either Lafayette or New Hampshire at 2:00 p.m. Dec. 7, at Alfond Stadium in Orono, Maine.

The River Hawks and Black Bears were originally supposed to drop the puck on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Alfond Arena in Orono. However, due to the FCS football game they will now play their matchup on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 4:00 p.m. eastern.

“We wanted to provide the best experience we could for our student-athletes and fans,” explained University of Maine interim athletic director Seth Woodcock to the Bangor Daily News.

The game was originally supposed to be aired on WVII-Channel 7/Fox College Sports on Saturday night and it is unknown Sunday’s game will be televised.

Maine hoped to move the game back to Friday, Dec. 6, but UMass Lowell has a short week with American International coming to the Tsongas Center on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. eastern.

This is the first of two-games the River Hawks and Black Bears will face each other, the second coming on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass., the weekend following Frozen Fenway.

Last season, the River Hawks were 1-2-0 against the Maine Black Bears during the three-game regular season series. However, UMass Lowell swept the Black Bears in two-games to advanced in the Hockey East playoffs in March. The River Hawks would go on to win the Hockey East Championship.
