Saturday night featured a matchup between the University of Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Lowell at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. The game was the first of three between the in-state rivals and will be the deciding game in the annual “Alumni Cup.”

UMass Lowell defeated Massachusetts, 5-2, in Hockey East’s Game of the Week. Joseph Pendenza, Chris Maniccia, Ryan McGrath, Joe Houk and Michael Fallon scored for the River Hawks, while Branden Gracel and Troy Power found the back of the net for the Minutemen.

UMass Lowell goaltender Doug Carr was able to stop 27-of-29 shots fired by Massachusetts and picked up his first victory since January 26. Massachusetts’ Steve Mastalerz had a slightly less stellar game, allowing four goals on 33 shots and moving his season record to 0-2-0.

Although the game was an out-of-conference game this time, the next two match-ups in February 2014 will count towards conference points. The additional game was added to become the deciding game of the “Alumni Cup,” which has been played annually between the two schools since 1994-95. UMass Lowell has won the previous to season’s cup with a 3-0-0 record in each season. The River Hawks have now topped the Minutemen in seven straight games.
