As Fenway Sports Management and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino officially welcome Frozen Fenway back to Fenway Park on Friday afternoon, Citi has been named the official sponsor of Frozen Fenway 2014.
Frozen Fenway began back in 2010 with the Boston Bruins battling the Philadelphia Flyers. Hockey East also made its Fenway debut in 2010 when Boston University topped Boston College, 3-2. The 2010 Frozen Fenway also featured a women’s game between New Hampshire and Northeastern as well.
Hockey East returned to Fenway in 2012 when Massachusetts defeated Vermont in OT, 3-2; Maine defeated New Hampshire in OT, 5-4; and Boston College defeated Northeastern, 2-1.
Citi Frozen Fenway 2014 will feature four games between eight Hockey East schools. On Jan. 4, Merrimack College and Providence College will battle in the early game, while Boston College will take on Hockey East’s newest member Notre Dame in the later tilt. The Following weekend on Jan. 11, UMass Lowell will face Northeastern followed by Maine and Boston University.
This marks the first outdoor game at Fenway Park for the UMass Lowell River Hawks and couldn’t come at a better time. The River Hawks are coming off the school’s best season in history, winning the Hockey East regular season title, Hockey East Championship and making a trip to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh, Penn.
With Citi’s new partnership with the Frozen Fenway event, Citi card holders can access a ticket presale for the event and special experiences ranging from youth clinics to exclusive skate times on the Fenway Park ice.
To get things started, Notre Dame captain Jeff Costello will toss out the first pitch at tonight’s Boston Red Sox game against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park. Costello is a senior forward for Notre Dame.
